A Daniel Halangahu penalty goal in the 78th minute guided Sydney University to a nail-biting 28-26 win over Warringah at Pittwater Rugby Park on Saturday. The Students’ unbeaten run in the 2008 Shute Shield competition was under severe threat when the hosts went to the break leading 21-11 and maintained the margin until midway through the second half when Sydney University ran in two converted tries to snatch a 25-21 lead.

Colts Maintain Unbeaten Run

Sydney University Colts consolidated their hold on the Colts Club Championship and the defence of their three titles with another Saturday of dominance, this time against Eastwood at T.G Milner Field.
First Grade ran out 43-10 winners after leading 19-5 at the break; Seconds ran up a 47-12 scoreline, while Thirds also snared a bonus point with a 22-5 result.
The three Colts grades remain unbeaten in 2008.

Day of records and remorse

Sydney University’s First Grade Colts went on a 28-try, 20-goal rampage to defeat Penrith 180-nil at Nepean Rugby Park on Saturday, sending officials in search of the record books.  They’re also in search of a video of the match to verify the result. One match official had the score 189-nil – 29 tries and 22 conversions. Five-eighth Bernard Foley was in charge of goal-kicking duties.

Four in Under-20 squad

Sydney University Football Club will provide four of the 26-man Australian team to contest the inaugural IRB Junior World Championship in Wales in June.
Hooker Nathan Charles, utility back Alfi Mafi, flanker Ben McCalman and fullback Peter Betham have been included in the squad for the Under-20 tournament, which follows the IRB's merger of the Under-19 and Under-21 tournaments.

Lyons off to Wales

Wallaby number eight David Lyons will probably not appear in Sydney University colours again after signing a reported four-year contract with the Welsh club Llanelli.  The 44-Test veteran will end his Australian Rugby Union and NSWRU contracts at the end of the Super 14 season to take up duties with the famous Welsh club.

Sydney University will begin its defence of the Shute Shield against Manly at Manly Oval on Saturday, with youth and experience dominating selection.
Four of the 2007 Colts premiership side – hooker Nathan Charles, second-rower Ben McCalman, centre Mitch Inman and winger Haydon Bushell - have been selected in the starting line-up, while 44-Test veteran David Lyons will come off the bench.

SUFC Gala Awards Night 2007

Last Saturday 170 SUFC players and supporters gathered at the Tattersalls Club to celebrate the year. Tim Davidson, our First Grade Captain for the last three consecutive premiership victories, took home top honours being awarded SUFC’s Best and Fairest, while Ben McCalman won the inaugural ABN AMRO Award for Best and Fairest Colt. The Michael Griffin Cup, which was announced last year as the Player's Player Award went to David Dennis who unfortunately was unable to attend the night as he was recovering from a knee operation.

The "Legends" match will take place as a curtain-raiser for the Trevor Allan Cup fixture between Uni and Randwick at Coogee Oval, August 25. Some very well known names are turning out including Warwick Waugh, Tim Kava and Kenny Wright for Randwick as well as Richard Harry, Nick Farr-Jones, Bob Egerton, John Langford and Rupert Rosenblum. It took Sydney University Fourth Grade two late tries to continue the winning form that has seen them maintain the top spot in the Fourth Grade competition. The first half saw more arguing and yellow cards than it did rugby. The single try to threatening winger, Eric Fransella, was the difference at the end of the first half.

Sydney University took over the lead in the Shute Shield competition on Saturday and they did it in emphatic fashion with an 82-nil thumping of Southern Districts at Forshaw Park. It was the club’s biggest win over the men from the Shire since they entered the competition in 1989.

Two converted tries and a penalty was enough to continue Fourth Grade’s winning form. Tries to Shayne Smith and returning scrum half, Chris Williams, saw Uni take the lead early in the first half. Despite the sizeable Parramatta attack the Students maintained their lead in a low scoring second half.

Sydney University flanker Phil Waugh has been named captain of the Wallabies for the Test against Wales in Sydney on Saturday night. Waugh, who was called up to captain Australia against Wales on the Wallabies’ European tour last November, is now favourite to take over the role for the 2007 World Cup.

Uni 4th Grade lose nail-biter in the rain

Sydney University 4th Grade lost its first game this season going down 5 - 7 to Manly in wet conditions. Scrappy football was played by both sides, however Manly converted their try late in the first half. In the traditional wet weather game the ball never travelled further than the fly-halves who kicked for territory. As a result the dedicated crowd standing in the rain, were not treated to the most entertaining rugby.

4th Grade secure first home victory for 2007

Sydney Uni 4th Grade overcame a sizable West Harbour opposition to win 20 – 7 in the team’s first home fixture of the season. Due to a lack of experienced front rowers at Wests the game was reduced to uncontested scrums. For Uni this meant one less area of the game in which their forwards could dominate and put more pressure on the backs to perform, as played a more attacking role.

Reputations counted for nothing at North Sydney Oval on Sunday when Northern Suburbs ripped into Sydney University and posted a 20-17 result in the second round of the 2007 Tooheys New Shute Shield. Sydney University had the bye in the first round, while Norths’ first round match against Randwick was postponed because of inclement weather.

Sydney Uni 4th Grade won their first match of the season against Norths, on a sunny Sunday morning at North Sydney Oval. It was a scrappy encounter in the beginning however the students showed skill and fitness to grind out the victory against the competent Northern Suburbs team.

A shoulder injury has forced Sydney University winger Michael Griffin out of the Tooheys Cup Sydney grade rugby union major semi-final clash with Randwick at Coogee Oval tomorrow. Griffin suffered the injury when he scored the first try in the University’s 47-12 win over Southern Districts in the final competition round at University Oval last Saturday and was replaced by Joey Philippe. The speedy Philippe will again replace Griffin in the Coogee Oval clash.

Defence was the order of the day at Two Blues Oval on Saturday when Sydney University defeated Parramatta 29-0 in their Tooheys New Cup clash in the Sydney grade rugby union competition. Second Grade triumphed 9-5; Thirds won 36-10; and Fourths remained undefeated with a 21-14 result.
