Sydney University wrapped up the 2008 Shute Shield minor premiership with a solid 42-14 win over Warringah on Saturday night, in the first rugby competition match played under lights at No.1 Oval. Although there are two competition rounds to play – the Students are at home to Randwick next Saturday and away to Southern Districts the following week – the minor premiership is already safely in Sydney University’s hands for the second year in a row.

Sydney University have the 2008 Shute Shield minor premiership in their sights after defeating Eastwood 29-17 at T.G. Millner Field on Saturday. The Students now have an eight-point buffer over second-placed Gordon, with home matches against fifth-placed Warringah and third-placed Randwick and an away match against cellar-dwellers Southern Districts to round out the season proper.

Prop Jerry Yanuyanutawa powered over for three of Sydney University’s 12 tries in their 76-nil win over Penrith at The Western Weekender Sports Stadium, St Marys, on Saturday. Yanuyanutawa, hooker Nathan Charles and tighthead prop Laurie Weeks – until he was given an early mark – were three of Sydney University’s best in a lop-sided encounter where the hosts were outplayed but committed to the end.

A 17-point haul from Eastern Suburbs fullback Gavin Debartolo helped his side to a 27-18 win over competition leaders Sydney University in front of a big Ladies Day crowd at Woollahra Oval on Saturday. Debartolo scored two tries and landed two conversions and a penalty goal as the enthusiastic hosts raced to a 27-8 half-time lead.

A second half resurgence from Northern Suburbs almost caused a boil-over at University Oval on Saturday, with Sydney University scoring a last-minute try to close out a 35-26 win and maintain the competition lead.
The Students controlled possession, territory and the scoreline in the first half to go to the break leading 28-7 with a bonus point in the bag.

Despite a below par performance, Sydney University maintained their outright lead of the Shute Shield with a nail-biting 25-20 win over a determined West Harbour at University No.1 Oval on Saturday.
After 13 rounds, the Students head the table on 56 points, with Gordon (53), Randwick (47), West Harbour (44), Eastwood (40) and Warringah (38) making up the top six.

It was like the good old days; a couple of Wallabies in the XV, a fired up opponent in Manly trying to outdraw the top gun, and a bigger than normal crowd at a cold and windy No.1 Oval.
With Phil Waugh at flanker and the club’s latest Australian representative, Dean Mumm, in the second-row, the Students prevailed 30-18 after leading 17-6 at the break. And though Sydney University dominated possession, territory and the scrum, the committed Marlins restricted them to three tries to two in a tough and, at times, entertaining encounter.

When Dean Mumm ran on to the Telstra Dome in the second half against Ireland in Melbourne on Saturday night, he became the Sydney University Football Club’s 103rd Australian representative.
The 24-year-old second-rower came off the bench to play a big part of the second half in Australia’s 18-12 win over Ireland.
