Championships in the bag

Sydney University’s tough 16-12 win over Eastern Suburbs at Woollahra Oval on Saturday wrapped up a sixth successive Club Championship with two rounds of the Shute Shield remaining. Sydney University has also won a fifth consecutive Colts Club Championship.
The win was built on the boot of five-eighth Daniel Halangahu, who converted the University’s only try and landed three penalty goals to guide the Students home.
In a tough, no-nonsense encounter – just the sort of game flanker Phil Waugh needed under his belt – the hosts led 12-3 at the break on the back of tries from outside-centre Ryan Cross and fullback Patrick Dellit.
The Students hit back in the second half with a fine try from flanker David Haigh, who backed up good work from centre Tom Carter and winger Jacob Taylor.
Halangahu added the conversion and two more penalties to snuff out a disappointed Eastern Suburbs.
The Students will now meet Manly at Manly Oval and wrap up the season proper with a match against Eastwood at University Oval.
