Following University’s first victory in fourths, it was Cato Caterson and Ryan Rat Burges’ thirds which were to battle Gordon for the Henderson Shield.

The Students were dominating play during the early stanza causing Gordon to be pinned in their territory. An early penalty was obtained . But some resolute defence from Gordon stopped them breaching a try. The banks finally broke after a five metre lineout was formed. University brought the ball down and controlled rolling saw the Students first try.

From the kickoff University replied with venom when breakaway Hamish Dunbar burst through a gap to be brought down just before the goal line. The University forwards recycled through thunderous rucking. Recycling was applied and another converted try was scored. 15-0 and the Students were  looking confident.

But in heartbreaking circumstances fate turned away from University. The second half saw Gordon focus on attacking through the forwards inside the University twenty two area. Gordon was going forward and in their quest to halt their progress University infringed at the ruck. These infringements caused the referee to award two penalty tries and two yellow cards. These indiscretions were enough for coach Caterson to tear the remaining follicles from under his nose!

All the momentum was with Gordon and time was running out. Some strategic replacements were made. Again Stefano Hunt was introduced into the game. His impact was immediately felt and he was placing players through gaps. A University ruck had formed inside the Gordon five metre area. Hunt passed within the forward pack and saw breakaway Jack Stanford score beneath the posts. 26-25 was on the big score board and time was nearly up.

A few lucky breaks transpired allowing University to form some attacking lineouts. But University did not enjoy any luck after such a promising start. Some crucial lineouts were stifled by Gordon and the match ended with Gordon victors at 26-25. A gut wrenching loss for the Students. However, enough for the young team to build upon for next year.
