SUFC, Waratah and Wallabies scrum halve Nick Phipps was awarded the University Male Blue of the Year at Saturday’s Annual SUSF Blues Dinner.
Nick has been part of SUFC since 2009 and has gone on to much higher honours since, his accolades include:
- Nick played 3 1st Grade games for SUFC in 2017, while returning from injury.
- Nick has come up through the SUFC Colts program and played 36 Grade games (30 in 1st Grade) for SUFC.
- He captained 1st Colts Premiership-winning team in 2009.
- He has had a Super Rugby contract since 2011, firstly with the Melbourne Rebels and since 2014 the NSW Waratahs.
- Nick made his debut for the Wallabies in 2011 and is now a senior member of the squad, having played 60 tests for Australia, he has been involved in two World Cups, reaching the final in 2015.
- Nick was also part of the Australia sevens team in 2009-10 and competed in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
- Off field Nick is studying part time for a Masters in International Business.
- Nick often offers his time to coach the Sydney University Juniors as well as attending SUFC Club functions as an Australian Representative.
Unfortunately Nick couldn’t make the dinner, however his award was collected on his behalf by SUFC Executive General Manager, David Haigh and 2015 SUFC Blues recipient, Jim Stewart.
Wayne Borsak and Matthew Hood also received Blues Awards during Saturday’s ceremony.
Wayne (picture below) joined SUFC in 2017 and was one of only two players to play in every 1st Grade game throughout the season (18). Wayne scored two tries in his first season at the Club while off field he is studying for a Graduate Certificate in Commerce.
Matthew Hood (picture below) has been a member of SUFC since 2013 making 47 Grade appearances. In 2017, his 5th year at the Club, Matt made his starting 1st Grade debut, going on to play 9 games in 1st Grade before being offered an Australian 7s contract. Matt made his Aussie 7s debut in the Oceania 7s tournament. Unfortunately Matt was unable to make the dinner as he was selected as the 13th man for the opening leg of the World Series in Dubai. Matt is also studying a Masters in Management.
