Did you know…

Lots of things to talk about today. But first of all a big congratulations to the Gordon R.F.C. on winning the Club Championship. The last time was 1998, which was also the year they won their last Shute Shield Premiership.

They did it tough (Gordon) after going to 19-0 lead after 16 minutes. The “Woodies” made a huge comeback to be in front in  2nd half to lead 24- 22 with 12 minutes to go. At this stage Gordon hadn’t scored their 4th try. Uni were looking at title no.17 and that may be miracles can happen. But it wasn’t to be and we came second by only 50 points.

There are many reasons why we might have come in second. But my choice is losing to Souths in the 86th minute and getting 2 points and not 5.

As I said last week Jack McCalman played his 100th Grade game and scored 1st Grade’s first try on Saturday. He is now SUFC 150th Centurion and the 21st Kings School student to do this.

Congratulations to Strath Yeo who played in the 3rd Grade Grand Final last year and made his debut in 1st Grade off the bench on  Saturday.

All of our seven teams made the Semi Finals with our 2nd and 3rd Grade teams being Minor Premiers. We and Randwick were the only Clubs to achieve all teams in finals.

Of the 66 games played in the seniors this season we lost only 13 games.

Saturday saw SUFC win the 4 teams that Western Sydney fielded. Our 1st XV won its 35th win in a row, that started on the 8.5.1999. It was also a new biggest win record verses Western Sydney, 72-24.

Our four sides scored 292 points to 55, that gave us an average score of 73-14. We scored 46 to 9. And 35 players scored tries. Of the 46 tries scored the backs scored 34 of them. Pretty good!

We have a new hero at the Club. You see last week I mentioned Eddie Poolman scored 4 tries. Well on the weekend he scored another five. Nine in two games and new leader in the Club try scorer of the year with 13 so far.

Two players who know were the try line was are 1st and 2nd Grade hookers (Declan Moore and Ben Carolan) who between them have scored 94 career tries and their both on 240 career points.

Our 2nd Grade backline scored 11 tries on the day, with everyone scoring except our Australian 7’s speedster Angus Bell.

Henry Robertson scored the Club’s 200th try in 2nd Grade’s 107-12 win.

When you put reserves on you expect them to produce for the team. Well seven of them got 9 tries and 2 goals, 49 points.

Six of our current senior players are in their 400 plus career points with Sam Renton on 489, Dan Poletto on 466, Ben Hughes on 442, Matt Hood on 440, Stu Dunbar on 435 and Josh Hardie on 427.

As I have touched on, there were lots of points on Saturday with Will Goddard reaching his 100 for this season with another 23 points. Jude Gibbs, Colts kicker got another 25 points and is now on 142. And of course Eddie Poolman. Stu Dunbar in 1st Grade got 17 points and Matt Hood scored a triple which takes him to 85 career tries.

While two of our Colts scored three tries in 1st Colts big 80-7 victory. They are Sione Taufui and Ian McLean.

And last but not least, next week James “Cato” Caterson coachs  his 150th game at Uni. His record is 149 games, won 124, lost 22, drew 3. Which gives him a success rate of 85.23%.

Go Uni!
