Jake Gordon is pushing his Wallabies case from Sydney, scoring a double for Sydney University in their 22-12 Shute Shield win over Eastern Suburbs at Woollahra Oval.

Gordon and Nick Phipps were left out of the 34-man touring squad for South Africa, with Will Genia, Nic White and Brumbies no.9 Joe Powell vying for spots in this weekend’s opening Test of the season.

But Gordon is doing his best to show coaching staff he should be called into the squad for other Rugby Championship matches in Brisbane, Perth or Auckland to push his World Cup case.

In other Shute Shield matches, fullback Ben Howard scored a double in Manly’s 30-19 win over Southern Districts, with Junior Wallabies hooker and new Waratahs signing Joe Cotton scoring a try for the Rebels following his relocation to Sydney.

Ruaridh MacKenzie notched a double for Warringah, with their 57-29 win over West Harbour keeping them on top of the ladder, while Junior Wallabies flyhalf Will Harrison return to duty for Randwick, helping kick them to a 26-13 win over Western Sydney.
