One of the great traits of Uni rugby is the connection it creates amongst players and supporters that can last decades. It was one such connection that lead to Chalk Road Buyers Agency now celebrating 10 years of sponsorship with SUFC.

It was a June afternoon at Uni #1 Oval back in 2011 and former Uni player, Ed Flitcroft was wedged between Andrew Wennerbom and Tony Sukkar on the far sideline watching the rugby. As Ed recalled, “I was telling Tony how my wife Hannah and I just had our first child and we recently made the daunting decision to leave our respective careers to start our own business (Chalk Road). I vividly recall Tony telling me upon me how much value and enjoyment Buildcorp got from their involvement with the Club over so many years. He strongly recommended we reconnect with Uni in this manner and said we wouldn’t regret it.  A meeting with Baden Stephenson (Haighy’s predecessor) ensued and not long after, Chalk Road formally became part of the Uni family.”

Over the past ten years Hannah, Ed and their two children Pip and Tom have spent many Saturday afternoons supporting the Students across Sydney or hitting the road for Country Rounds in Mudgee and Bowral. “It always fun to take clients out to games and even more fun to catch up with plenty of old Uni mates each week, but there has always been another valuable benefit we get from it. Our children continue to pick up really important lessons about sportsmanship, respect for opponents, and seeing the rewards you get from continued hard work and practice. The SUFC environment has been fantastic in that regard and they also witness a fully integrated rugby club where the men and women’s programmes operate on equal footing.

Looking back over the 10 years, we asked Chalk Road for their nominations in the following categories:

  • Best Performance: 2018 Shute Shield Grand Final against Warringah
  • Toughest Win(s): A come from behind victory at Rat Park against Warringah 22-19 in Round 6, 2016; punching back into a fierce southerly for the entire second half! Or beating Eastwood at TG Milner 24-11 in 2019. Uni copped red cards and yellow cards but got home in a rugged fixture in a very hostile environment.
  • Most Heart-breaking Loss: Home semi-final at Uni # 1 in 2014. Ben Volavola slotted a penalty after the bell close to the sideline 40m out giving Southern Districts the win 27-25.
  • Most Entertaining / Bizarre Match: Beating Eastwood 49 – 44 after the siren in Mudgee 2021
  • “Down but not out”: 2016 First Grade Colts GF: Trailing 8-21 with 15 mins to go, Uni scored a Try in the 80th minute and went on to win in Extra Time
